Georgia Totto O' Keefe was born on November 15, 1887 in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin. She was the second of seven children. She longed to be an artist from an early age. Georgia O' Keefe received art lessons as a young child. She attended the Art Institute of Chicago from 1905-1906 and from 1907-1908, she went to study at the Art Students League of New York. During the summer of 1915, she took classes at the Teachers College of Columbia University. There, she began her re-entry into the world of painting. One of Georgia O'Keefe's influences was Arthur Dow. She said that, "It was Arthur Dow who affected my start, who helped me to find something of my own." Another one of O' Keefe's influences was Juan Hamilton. O' Keefe's vision had deteriorated so she did not think that she could paint any more. After meeting Juan, she returned to work. Georgia O' Keefe was an artist who is famous for her very detailed paintings of flowers. Georgia O' Keefe married Alfred Steiglitz in 1924. O' Keefe and Steiglitz worked together until his death in 1946. In 1976, O' Keefe's illustrated autobiography became a best seller. The next year, she received the Medal of Freedom from President Gerald Ford. In 1985, she received the Medal of the Arts from President Ronald Regan. Georgia O' Keefe died on March 6, 1986 at the age of 98 years old.
